This form allows our team to learn a little more about you, your interests, and your aptitudes as they relate to volunteering with the CTDC.
Below is the list of available volunteer opportunities. Once you have filled out the Volunteer Inquiry Form, you can click “I am interested” on a specific volunteer opportunity.

- Join us as a Connecticut History Day Regional or State Contest and support students’ historical research and project creation.
- Review judge feedback for students to ensure legibility and continuity.

- Come help us get ready for Connecticut History Day contest season! Assist in the compilation and organization of materials distributed at the contests such as folders of reference materials for CHD judges, buttons for participants, and other necessities.
- Volunteers must be able to pick up, count, sort small objects, as well as lift a box of 10-20 lbs.
- This opportunity is great for a detail-oriented person.

- Want to be involved in Connecticut History Day Contests, but in a capacity other than judging? Help us ensure the contest runs smoothly by offering directional assistance to participants, run activities for participants, and monitor the entry evaluation spaces.
- This opportunity is great for someone who enjoys operating in a fast-paced environment with a friendly demeanor. Knowledge of one of our contest sites is a plus.

- Join us at one of our CHD contests to meet with students and assess their work in one of five project categories: documentary exhibit, research paper, performance, or website. Five Regional Contests take place in March and the State Contest on Saturday, May 3 at Central CT State University.
- CHD Contests are the culmination of research projects undertaken by students in grades 6-12 throughout the academic year - you will work on a small team to assess and rank projects, as well as provide constructive feedback.
- This opportunity is great for someone who enjoys working with secondary students, works well collaboratively and enjoys learning. History expertise is not required for this position.
- Training will be provided, and is required for this position. Some pre-contest preparation is required.

- Act as a judge for students debating theoretical policy change in the state of Connecticut on two person teams.
- Determine who wins a round of debate, and offer feedback to the students.
- Two rounds of debate are held per division: preliminary and finals for both the 6-8 grade and the 9-12 grade divisions.
- This opportunity is great for someone with a background in debate, law, or public policy.
- Training will be provided, and is required for this position.

- This opportunity is ideal for someone with a legal or constitutional study background, who has experience working with students, and is comfortable providing constructive feedback.

Packing Kid Governor® Voting Kits – October 14 – 30, 2024
- Packing Voting Kits of election materials to be mailed to 350 5th-grade classes participating in the Connecticut’s Kid Governor® program this fall.
- Each Voting Kit includes official ballots, “I Voted” stickers, pencils, buttons, balloons, and more to make the Kid Governor® Statewide Election an authentic civic learning experience for students.
- Ideal for someone who is task-oriented and does not mind repetitive work that makes a meaningful impact.
- Requires standing, walking through an assembly line to assemble Kits, and light lifting/bending.
- Volunteers are welcome Monday-Friday between 9:00am-5:00pm with some evening and weekend options available, depending on staff availability.

Connecticut’s Kid Governor® Bus Tour – Wednesday, November 6 – Thursday, November 7, 2024
- The annual Election Rally Bus Tour visits 8-12 schools participating in Connecticut’s Kid Governor®. Program staff and volunteers hold an outdoor rally outside each school to energize the 5th graders preparing to elect the state’s next Kid Governor.
- Volunteers help set up a podium, balloons, banners, and signs for each rally just beside the bus; hold signs and cheer with the students during each rally; and breakdown the setup before the bus departs.
- The bus departs from and returns to Hartford and volunteers must commit to being on the bus for the full day. Snacks and an on-board restroom are provided.
- Ideal for someone looking for a full-day, event-based, high-energy volunteer opportunity.

- We study and analyze program participation data to better understand our audience, how it changes year to year, and opportunities for improvement.
- Looking for a volunteer to pull demographic data about schools that participate in Connecticut’s Kid Governor® from the State Department of Education’s website.
- Ideal for someone looking for a project-based, flexible volunteer opportunity that they can do remotely and as their schedule permits.
- Requires ability to navigate websites, comfort navigating spreadsheets, and familiarity with filling out Google Forms.

- Volunteers will watch our recorded programs on YouTube with an auto generated transcript and make sure the subtitles are correct, making corrections to the text where needed. Special attention is required with proper names and special terms related to the program topic.
- Volunteers will then send back corrected transcript so it can be uploaded to the video.
- Volunteers can choose what programs they want to review from a curated list.
- Strong written communication and listening skills

- The Connecticut Democracy Center’s Kid Governor® program is expanding nationally with affiliate programs in other states. In order to bring Kid Governor® to a new state, we must partner with a civics-focused organization in that state to license and manage the program year-round.
- Volunteer needed to research the mission, programs, structure, and background organizations in other states that might be strong affiliate partners.
- Ideal for someone looking for a flexible volunteer opportunity that they can do remotely and as their schedule permits.
- Ideal for someone who enjoys online research and preparing reports/summaries.
- Requires experience navigating websites and entering information into a Word document.
- At times, we may ask for research on an organization quickly (over the course of a few days) if we have a growing interest in a state or from a specific organization. At other times, we may ask a volunteer to research several potential organizations in a state over the course of a few weeks so we can evaluate options and conduct our own outreach.
