The Connecticut Democracy Center Awarded CT Humanities Partnership Grant for Connecticut’s Kid Governor

Hartford, Conn. – The Connecticut Democracy Center (CTDC) at Connecticut’s Old State House is honored to have been selected for a $25,000 partnership grant from Connecticut Humanities for the Connecticut’s Kid Governor® (CTKG) program.

The partnership will make it possible for the CTDC to continue offering CTKG as a free program, ensuring that all 5th grade classrooms have equitable access to the program and resources. With schools facing tight and reduced budgets, CTDC is striving to keep economic barriers from impacting participation in the program.

More than 6,000 students from 263 classes and 110 schools across the state participated in the 2020 CTKG Election.

Connecticut Humanities, a nonprofit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, supports cultural and historic organizations that tell the state’s stories, build community, and enrich lives.

“Connecticut has a centuries-long civic tradition that has inspired and informed the rights of individuals and the electoral process,” explains Dr. Jason Mancini, executive director at CT Humanities. “Our democracy demands civic understanding and participation to thrive. The Connecticut’s Kid Governor program provides students with opportunities to engage with our state’s history and the concepts vital to our society today – ensuring they have the tools necessary for full and informed citizenship. CT Humanities is proud to partner with the Connecticut Democracy Center in supporting the Connecticut’s Kid Governor program.”

With few organizations offering authentic elementary civics programming, and history and civics often marginalized in elementary classroom, the program is even more important than ever. CTDC is committed to eliminating barriers to participation by keeping CTKG free and turnkey. This is especially important in a program where students actually vote.

Connecticut’s Kid Governor® is a national award-winning, statewide civics program created by The Connecticut Democracy Center (CTDC) in 2015. This ground-breaking approach to civics education immerses fifth-grade students in learning about state government, elections and voting, and civic participation through a real-life election for their state’s Kid Governor. More information about the program is available at CT.KidGovernor.org.

The Connecticut Democracy Center (CTDC) provides people with a lifetime pathway to active citizenship and the tools to take civic action in their own communities. CTDC strengthens civic engagement in the Constitution State by providing comprehensive and unbiased educational programming and outreach on state government, civics, history, and citizenship.
