Case for Support
- Information we can rely on and institutions we can believe in.
- A commitment to impassioned civil discourse, working across differences to address challenges and solve problems.
- A shared and sincere belief that individuals can make a difference: protect the institutions, effect measurable change, hold leaders accountable.
- Continuity and stewardship; infrastructure and commitment to preparing each new generation for the responsibility of citizenship/civic engagement. The belief that what you do truly matters.
- Bias and exploited media illiteracy, ranging from politically skewed reporting, blurred lines between fact and opinion, social media manipulation to outright misinformation.
- Disillusionment, loss of faith in, and insufficient understanding of the institutions of government (voting/elections, government operations, law, justice and the courts, etc.)
- Growing intolerance, political tribalism, incivility and combativeness in our communities and in government.
- The sense of futility and learned helplessness, such as thoughts around “my voice doesn’t count”, “nothing ever changes”, “it’s too complicated for me to understand much less act on”, or “everything in this sphere is inherently “bad.”
- Short-term thinking: we’re at a “tipping point” but didn’t get here overnight; it’s just about pulling from the brink, it’s also about long-term behavior change to ensure our communities and democratic institutions stay healthy.
- Produces nonpartisan educational programming that shows how government functions and how history impacts today, and helps build critical thinking and information gathering skills central to media literacy.
- Provide authentic programming and events that reduce the distance between people and government institutions/experts to instill more confidence and hope/belief that “good still exists” (e.g. direct access to government proceedings, programs like “Untangling the Tally”; “The State’s Filing Cabinet” and “Go Big. Vote Local,” along with many other CTDC programs.
- Convene and connect people and groups for conversations to explore important issues in a safe space (Encounters & other dialogue programs).
- Offer stories from our history and present day experiences like CHD and CTKG that help inspire people to engage constructively, believing they can make a difference.
- Develop a growing portfolio of programs and events across multiple platforms (destination/outreach/multimedia) tailored audiences of virtually all ages, to provide a long-term, generational solution to a long-term, generational problem.
- Critical support for programs and events at Connecticut’s Old State House – a public/private partnership with CGA and CTDC that relies on earned revenue and donor support to continue bringing thought provoking programming and exciting special events to local, national and international audiences who visit this national historic landmark.
- Support for successful outreach programs like CHD and CTKG, helping to expand their reach to more schools across the state, establishing the CTDC as the preeminent civic education leader in the space.
- Resources to research, innovate and create new initiatives, including a new streaming media platform that will expand the CTDC’s audience and other audiences.
