SALLY WHIPPLE HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS IN SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

Hartford, Conn – Sally Whipple, Executive Director of The Connecticut Democracy Center at Connecticut’s Old State House, has been honored by the Connecticut Council for the Social Studies as the 2021 recipient of the Bruce Fraser Friend of Social Studies Award for her outstanding commitment to social studies education in Connecticut.

“For her entire career, Ms. Whipple has worked tirelessly to promote social studies education from her work at the Noah Webster House and at the Mark Twain House to her time at the Lebanon Historical Society,” states the recognition announcement from the Connecticut Council for the Social Studies. “In the last twelve years, she has brought that passion to rebuilding the Old State House into a leader for the study of social studies education in Connecticut, creating such programs as the award-winning Kid Governor Civics program and overseeing CT History Day.”

The award is named for Bruce Fraser, PhD, a noted leader of the Connecticut history community and the force behind the Emmy-Award-winning The Connecticut Experience on PBS, as well as the exhibit, An Orderly and Decent Government, on permanent display at the Legislative Office Building, in addition to being the former Executive Director of Connecticut Humanities for 30 years.

“This is a well-deserved accolade for someone whose commitment to the mission and vision of the Connecticut Democracy Center has been indispensable to me as we’ve charted our path forward over the past several years,” said CTDC President & CEO William Bevacqua “Way to go, Sally – your work makes us all very proud!”

A reception is being planned for October to celebrate the award.
