The lawn at Connecticut’s Old State House is a tiny park open to the public

On a hot summer day, city dwellers welcome the opportunity to relax in the shade of a tall tree. Connecticut’s Old State House, located in the heart of downtown Hartford, has launched a campaign to remind residents and visitors that the beautiful shady lawn in front of this historic building is open to the public, and can be viewed as a miniature park available to be enjoyed by all.

Gates to the Old State House lawn are open Tuesdays through Saturdays between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Visitors are welcome to bring a blanket, chairs or even a picnic to enjoy in this tiny urban oasis. Use of the lawn is free, and all are welcome.

The Old State House is conveniently located on the city bus route and is within a few blocks of free DASH shuttle service stops. Metered parking is available on nearby side streets, and parking validation (reducing your cost to $5) is available for the State House Square Garage at 55 Market Street.

After relaxing on the lawn, visitors are encouraged to make a trip inside Connecticut’s Old State House to discover Connecticut’s role in history and explore the unique, restored government chambers, Mortensen Gallery of Hartford History and Museum of Curiosities. Connecticut’s Old State House is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5:00 pm, with the last admission at 4:00 pm. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for seniors and children over 6.
